Karikome Pond

A beautiful place on the edge of Fukui on your way towards Gifu (if you could drive over the mountains there) holds Karikome Pond. We made it there while the fall leaves (紅葉. koyo) were still quite beautiful. The hike through the park to the pond, about an hour, was really beautiful. At one point I was really confused how we were going further and further up to a pond, but it was in the mountains. We had a picnic lunch there, though not on par with some of the Japanese visitors who carry supplies to cook actual food with. It was really nice to get to hike around and enjoy nature. I saw a snake but luckily nothing else and no bears. The only part of this day trip that would keep me from going back was the drive on mountain roads that are basically one way and have no guardrail–just drops off. Otherwise, it was beautiful and a nice fun fall outing. some info on fall leaves in Japan
